Volunteers for Harbor Days 2015 – 5K and 10K runs
Welcome to Harbor Days 2015 in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. As volunteers supporting the 5/10K runs, you will be surrounded by some of the greatest natural resources in the State of Illinois. Much of the weekend’s activities will be centered in North Point Marina, which is part of Illinois Beach State Park. Our 5K run will wind through the Marina Complex and a trail in Spring Bluff Nature Preserve (SBNP). The 10 K race will then continue south into the part of Illinois Beach State Park (IBSP) that has also been designated a Nature Preserve. Both SBNP and IBSP have numerous rare and endangered species of plants and animals.

We have been granted a very limited recreation permit to conduct the run on the trails through the parks. We must be especially mindful of our location. At no time are runners, volunteers or other visitors to stray off the marked trails or disturb the vegetation or animals in any way. What we do encourage is that while you are visiting this exceptional site, you take some time to enjoy your surroundings including birds, flowers, trees and animals that could face extinction in Illinois if not for the safe haven provided by the nature preserve system. You might even consider becoming a Volunteer Steward in the Nature Preserve.

What should I wear to volunteer?
For your time and effort, you’ll receive a great T-shirt! We want you to wear it while you’re helping out so that you are easily identifiable to racers and crews. Remember that weather near Lake Michigan is variable. Just because it's July or August does not mean that it's necessarily warm enough for shorts and sandals. Early morning fog or a lake breeze can lower temperatures. Be prepared with pants, and sweatshirt. Also, don't forget the sunscreen.

Can I bring my family, friend, neighbor or co-worker?
The more the merrier! To help with appropriate staffing, it's best to know numbers in advance, so please register anyone who is volunteering. Although we'll never turn away great help! 

How long should I plan to help? 
Some assignments will require a strong commitment of particular hours. Just let us know what you can do and we'll make the most appropriate assignment.

What should I do if I cannot make it? 
Just let us know. We recognize that there are unforeseeable circumstances, but if you're able to send a quick email or give us a call, we'll be able to adjust. m.kozlowski08@gmail.com
Want to help?   Specific needs

Water Stations: There are 3 water stations on the Run
Duties: Fill water cups, distribute to runners, clean up dropped cups. Cheer Runners 7-10 each Total 21-30  Time 8:30 to 10:30

Run Registration: Check in runners, distribute materials. Sit down job.     Total 5   Time 8 to 10

Run Organization: Help organize runners into groups - assist with race start  Total 8     Time 8:15 to 10

Run course guides: Stationed along run to guide and cheer runners. Keep area clean   Total 8 - 15   Time 8:30 to 10:30

Run Finish Line: Direct runners to various locations. Total 6-8
     Time 9:30  to 11

Run Green Team: We are running through two nature preserves - lets have them in better shape than we found them - general clean up / recycling.  Total 8    Time 10 to 11:30

Medical/Safety: Help maintain the safety of the run  Total 4
   Time 8:30 to 10:30

General assistance / cheering: Help in any way needed.
   Total 8 - 10      Time 8 to 11, or two shifts 8 to 10 and 9 to 11.
